Launched in 2015, the Express Entry Program quickly became one of the most appreciated systems in the world, as it provided equal relocation chances to foreigners seeking to move to Canada. The scheme relies on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) through which applicants can calculate their scores based on the points they obtain for meeting certain criteria.

What does the Comprehensive Ranking System imply?
The CRS is an online tool developed by the Canadian government meant to award points based on specific criteria to those who want to immigrate to Canada. More specifically, applicants must fill out the fields of this tool, and based on their score they will find out if they are eligible for the Express Entry Program.
The Canada CRS has no fixed minimum score (67/100 is only the FSW eligibility grid) and ranks candidates out of a total of 1200 points.

How does it work?
If you are a foreign citizen and want to relocate to Canada, the first step you will need to do is fill out your profile on the Canada CRS. You need to complete information like:
- work qualifications and experience;
- studies;
- age and marital status;
- language skills.
If you meet the minimum requirements for these fields, you should enter the Express Entry pool; there is no minimum CRS score, but only candidates above a draw’s cut-off are invited. The government carries out Express Entry draws regularly but without a fixed schedule (general, program-specific and category-based draws) and candidates with the best scores are issued invitations to apply for the program they are interested in.
Given a large number of applications, it is best to try to obtain the highest score possible, which is 1200 points.

The Canada CRS and the Express Entry Scheme
The Express Entry Program has 3 sub-schemes:
- the Canadian Experience Class (CEC);
- the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW);
- the Federal Skilled Trades (FST).
All 3 immigration programs require applicants to first pass the Comprehensive Ranking System requirements in order to be accepted.
The Federal Skilled Worker Program
Foreign citizens who do not have prior experience in the Canadian labor market can apply for the Express Entry Canada scheme under the Federal Skilled Worker subclass. This also has specific requirements which imply:
- at least 12 months of experience in the past 10 years;
- the work must have been in a TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation of the NOC;
- good knowledge of English or French (a minimum level of 7, according to the Canadian testing requirements);
- at least a high school diploma is also required.
The main condition of this subclass is for the applicant to plan to live outside Quebec. It is also possible to bring family members along, as long as he or she has the financial means to support the dependents.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program
The third subclass of the Canadian Express Entry scheme is the FST. As its name says, this subclass targets skilled people. One must have a job offer from a Canadian company or the documents to prove their qualifications.
This is the subclass with the least requirements, and it is intended for persons willing to live in any other province or territory than Quebec. Also, the minimum language level for the Federal Skilled Trades Program is CLB 5 for speaking and listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing.

Awarding points under the Canadian merit-based ranking system
Here is how the points are awarded under the CRS:
- language skills can bring you up to 136 points for the first official language (single applicant), plus extra points for knowledge of both French and English;
- education can bring up to 150 points (single applicant);
- Canadian work experience can bring up to 80 points;
- age can bring up to 110 points (single applicant aged 20–29).
However, these points alone are rarely enough to reach a draw's cut-off, which is why the system is designed to help you improve your score. For example, obtaining employment for a minimum period of one year before applying for the Canada CRS counts as Canadian work experience (up to 80 points), while a job offer alone no longer brings points since 25 March 2025. A spouse's education, language and Canadian work experience can bring up to 40 points. Also, having a brother or sister in Canada who is a citizen or permanent resident adds up to 15 points.
